Conclusionsā€ƒ A wholly state‐reimbursed clinical stop‐smoking service providing behavioural support and medication in a region of high economic and social disadvantage has reached a significant proportion of the smoking population. Long‐term success rates are lower than are found typically in clinical trials, but higher than would be expected if the smokers were to try and quit unaided. Source: BMJ Area: News According to the results of a systematic review and meta-analysis published early online in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), the use of varenicline to aid in smoking cessation is not associated with an increased risk of serious cardiovascular (CV) events.      The authors note that a previous meta-analysis of the safety of varenicline concluded that it increased the risk of CV serious adverse events by 72%.  Doubts about these conclusions were however raised due to various methodological issues, including the exclusion of trials with no events, the inclusion of adverse events way beyond the treatment period, and use of the Peto odds ratio (which has shown bias under conditions of imbalance design and rate events; present in most of the...
